Di's row by row

Hi all, here is Di's row 2. I haven't trimmed around the outside yet but the majority of the work is done. Some of those blocks are not exactly 8" Di so you may need to add sashing between the rows or you may be a sewing magician and be able to make the seams line up :) Either way I am quite pleased with how this turned out, not bad for a first attempt t foundation piecing. Jane, I'm off to think red and white thoughts as it's your block next. Lyn, still haven't had a minute to go and buy myself a journal *sigh* hoping to make some time tomorrow or friday.

Di's row 2

No picture tonight (ahh!) as I'm not quite finished but coming along nicely Di :) Hope you like Snail's Trail blocks and I am happy I found good matches for your fabric, it really helped having the little squares of your first row and the photo in your log book. Will try to post a photo tomorrow (provided I get it all sewn together, of course).

Tulip Blocks Row 2

Here is a pic of Row 1 and Row 2, they are only pinned together as I don't have my sewing machine at the moment. Ted has done an excellent job of keeping to my colour ideas, even without the book or the row. The block is called "A Tulip Border" and finished is 6"x8"

Thank-you Ted :)

Ronnie’s 1st Row

“MY QUILT OF MANY QUOTES”
OR “THE PROVERBIAL QUILT”

I was really inspired by Hope’s link to the Quick Quilts site for the Log Cabin Swirl Quilt. I usually have a go at something I haven’t seen before so I thought I’d give it a go to see if I liked it as much as the pic. The more I looked at it the more I liked it. It was a bit of a challenge for me as I’ve not attempted much in the way of foundation piecing – which is what this is. The centre block is different to the other 4 and I’ve used it as a stepping stone joining the patterns together.

Doing the Log Cabin Swirl went against my original idea with the soft and pretty pastels and with this row I had to choose 11 colours – so went with medium brights. I have included the fabrics for you to use in your rows too as they are now ¾’s of a FQ and may be useful if needed to match colours.

Even though the block is 6” I enlarged it by photocopying the foundation template by 141% and it comes out EXACTLY 8inches. Phew – it came in at 40.5” x 8.5” – just what is required. Hope you like it too – thanks Hope for the link.

Also, I have chosen a “Quilter’s” Theme for this quilt and was inspired by an article on Conversation Quilts. A conversation quilt has quotes or proverbs written or embroidered on it. This can be done on the white background fabric – wherever you like and I have included the acid-free pen for handwriting your own quote/proverb. I love the idea of this being MY quilt. I hope you like my ideas too.

Enjoy your sewing,
Ronnie – 9th Jan 2006.

PS: I still have to write my quotes on the blocks so don’t try to find them – they’re not there yet….

Menindee's Row 1

The colours don't shwo up particularly well in the photo of the whole row, the lights are a mixture of creams and greens. My feature fabric is the one in the lower right witht the honeycomb and bees on it.

Progress

Hi all, I was just sending Menindee an invite to the blog and there are now 14 of us able to post to the blog (Diann do you want me to send your invite again as you never took it up?

I thought I would do a little housekeeping and get a set of first row group 2 photos together in one place, later today probably. Do the group 1 girls want a set too? I guess yes so I'll do them too. Not all the rows are up yet and we still have 4 weeks until your first row needs to be finished so, no rush. I make the deadline 15.02.06 (according to Ted's spreadsheet). It's getting nice and busy in here, tho :) Has everyone said what their theme is? I'd like to put that info with the photos so people can see both when they are thinking about each other's rows. Is there any other info you'd like to see on here?

The theme for my quilt is Christmas, inspired by the great quilt Jenkay made from the friendship block swap for 2005 :) The prints are all predominantly red or blue because that's was the christmas prints I had in my stash in abundance. I am happy for people to include green, gold, or any fabrics they consider to be christmassy - most of the prints have stars on them somewhere so I am also happy to receive stars for this quilt.

Don't look too closely - my pieceing is shocking! I think it would have been a good idea to have done this as a foundation pieced block - but, I'm wise after the fact ;)

Row 1

This is my first row - I'm in group 1 but wanted to have a go at blogging. It's taken me a few days to get this far. I used a log cabin block called Squared Log Cabin which was in a link provided by Spooky in 2005 Block Lotto. The paisley fabric in the centre and the outside strip is my feature fabric.

Flowers for Ted (At the bottom of my Garden)

These are the other blocks in close-up (The Cornflower Block is earlier in the blog) As you can see I haven't finished the embroidery yet, but these are for Ted to get a better idea of the colours as she begins to work on the second row for this quilt.

Just finished Jane's row. It's called Picket Fence and I think it lends itself quite nicely to a row x row quilt. Hope you like it Jane
Di

This is my first row. Navy and brights. I was going to go Amish but decided to veer slightly away from that by using navy. I'm using the colours as my theme.

Di

PS Ignore my previous post. Don't know how I did this as it was exactly the same way as before!!

Posting pictures

I've been trying to upload a couple of pictures to the blog without success. They must be floating around the ether somewhere cos I don't know where they have gone. Can somebody help a poor computer illeterate like myself please?

Log Cabin Variation or square within a square?

Here is a pic of my completed first row. When I first started this block I had seen a "log Cabin with a twist" so this is what I was trying to achieve...it may have worked better if the central piece was smaller and the block was larger. Oh well, it still achieves some of what I intended. I really like the colours, they are fresh and bright (but not too bright) and juicy. The only fabric that I bought especially is the apple green, tone on tone print. The fabrics were from the FQ's sent and received throughout 2005 and what I had in my stash - mostly leftovers from previous quilts. I also raided my scrapbag for some pieces.

I really like scrappy quilts, so please think about that when you get to work on my rows. I will be including some of the apple green tone on tone fabric for each person to use in the row. I will include close up pics of each block to give a better idea of the colours I used.
